2023 Delaware Contractor's Association
Construction Excellence Award

EHS was awarded the 2023 award for the completion of repairs to the Ashland Covered Bridge. The Ashland Covered Bridge is located in New Castle County, DE and is one of the last covered bridges left in the state of Delaware. Built in 1860, the Ashland Bridge holds a historic title as the oldest and smallest covered bridge in Delaware.  A storm event in August 2022 floated an uprooted tree downstream causing damage to various parts of the truss. Part of Eastern Highway Specialists, Inc. (EHS) main line of work is structure maintenance. This particular work order came through a DelDOT Structure Maintenance – North District Contract. EHS was tasked with repairing the damaged truss components while temporarily supporting the top chord of the truss. The work also included replacing damaged siding and repainting the wood structure.

The American Society of Highway Engineers awarded EHS and its project partner, the Delaware River and Bay Authority, The 2014 Project of the Year Under 2 Million for the completion of the Magazine Ditch Floodgate Replacement. This project was completed under difficult tidal conditions at the outlet of Magazine Ditch into the Delaware River. The job could only be completed during low tide, with a west wind and with no rain having occurred in the previous days.
